British Values at Sarum St Paul's

At Sarum St Paul's, we are committed to preparing our children to be thoughtful, responsible and active citizens. Through our vision, Rooted in Love, Growing Together, we nurture children who understand their place in the wider world and who are ready to make a positive contribution to society.

The Department for Education states that all schools should actively promote the fundamental British Values of:

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect
  • Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

These values are embedded throughout school life and are closely linked to our Christian vision and values of Love, Community, Courage and Growth.

Democracy

We encourage children to understand that their voice matters and that everyone has the right to be heard.

Children experience democracy through:

  • School Council elections and pupil leadership opportunities
  • Sharing their views through pupil voice activities and surveys
  • Contributing ideas during class discussions and collective worship
  • Learning to listen respectfully to different opinions

Through these experiences, children learn that decisions can be made fairly and that everyone has a role to play within a community.

The Rule of Law

Children learn the importance of rules and why they help keep everyone safe, happy and able to learn.

We promote this through:

  • Our school rules: Ready, Respectful, Safe
  • Consistent behaviour expectations and restorative approaches
  • Learning about rights and responsibilities
  • Visits from community members and services such as the police, fire service and local organisations

Children learn that rules and laws exist to protect individuals and communities.

Individual Liberty

We encourage children to make choices, take responsibility and develop confidence in who they are.

Children are given opportunities to:

  • Take on leadership roles and responsibilities
  • Make choices about their learning and wider school activities
  • Express their views respectfully
  • Develop resilience and independence

We help children understand that freedom comes with responsibility and respect for the rights of others.

Mutual Respect

Respect lies at the heart of our school community and reflects our Christian vision of being rooted in love.

Children learn to:

  • Treat others with kindness and consideration
  • Value the contributions of others
  • Work collaboratively and support one another
  • Celebrate each other's achievements

Our diverse school community provides many opportunities for children to learn the importance of positive relationships and belonging.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

As a Church of England school, we celebrate diversity and encourage children to develop an understanding of different faiths, beliefs and cultures.

This is promoted through:

  • Religious Education
  • Collective worship
  • Learning about different cultures and traditions
  • Marking significant festivals and events
  • Welcoming visitors from different backgrounds and communities

We encourage children to be curious, respectful and open-minded, recognising that every person is unique and valued.

Living British Values Every Day

British Values are not taught as a standalone subject. They are woven through our curriculum, collective worship, relationships and daily interactions.

By living out our vision, Rooted in Love, Growing Together, we help our children develop into confident, respectful and compassionate citizens who are ready to contribute positively to their local, national and global communities.
